Jemele Hill urges Black women to stop ‘fighting over crumbs’ at White companies

“I set a monetary goal in my life, [but] it was based on nothing,” Hill told rolling out. “In my community at the time that seemed like a lot, but I think what always kept me going is knowing that there was always more. I didn’t have a ceiling. I know other people always wanted to put a ceiling on me, but I never saw that ceiling for myself. All I knew was to keep going, keep pushing boundaries and to keep really demanding the best not only for myself but demanding my space in this business.”

“That’s what happens when you get more successful when you keep going is that your goals change, and I think that’s totally fine. The goals I had in year one shouldn’t be the goals I have in year five, and the ones at year five shouldn’t be the ones when I get to year 10. These are all things I kept in mind as I continued to strive and advance in this career.”

Hill also shouted-out the Black female sports journalists who came before her like Robin Roberts, Claire Smith and Pam Oliver.
