On March 27, a three-year-old boy in Tennessee was found dead after he accidentally shot and killed himself with an AR-15.

The child’s mother, Tinesha Jackson, was getting food with a friend while the uncle was taking care of him and his four-year-old brother at her house. While the uncle was sleeping, the three-year-old found an unsecured AR-15 under a pile of clothing.

When Jackson arrived home, she found a gunshot wound to her son’s head and rushed him to the hospital where he died.

Jackson is being charged with criminally negligent homicide, while the accused gun owner, Tedrick Butler, is being charged with criminally negligent homicide, prohibited weapons, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, tampering with evidence, or fabricating evidence, and possession of a controlled substance.

Investigators found spent cartridge casings behind the home, two AR-style pistols, a Glock 9mm pistol illegally converted to fully automatic, a backpack containing marijuana, and additional marijuana in the closet.

Butler admitted to leaving the AR-15 in Jackson’s bedroom and having ownership of the backpack and other weapons found. He also admitted to removing weapons from the bedroom prior to the search warrant the police issued.
