Among the multiplicity of projects that new Hollywood power broker Issa Rae is working on as part of her multimillion-dollar deal with HBO is a new comedy series, “Rap Sh!t,” that’s centered on the City Girls.
Issa Rae is serving as the executive producer, along with City Girls duo JT and Yung Miami serving in the co-producing role. The half-hour comedy series revolves around two estranged friends from high school, JT and Yung Miami, who somehow reunite to make their dreams of a rap group come to fruition.
Rae is emerging off the surprise classic on HBO, “Insecure,” which captured the imagination of millions of fans and earned her a five-year, 40 million-dollar deal to work on at least 15 more projects. “Rap Sh!it” will be the latest that is schedule to drop on HBO Max on July 16.
With the new series, Rae wanted to explore the road traveled by one of an abundance of female rap acts of the modern era.
“I think this is just such a unique time in hip-hop, especially when it comes to female rappers, because there’s such an abundance, and it doesn’t feel like they’re all in competition with each other,” Rae said about the series to Harper’s Bazaar.
“I’m a child of the ’90s, and there used to always be a tendency to put two women against one another. It feels like we’re in an era where there’s such a supportive environment now because of that abundance. All of that, combined with just my own story of coming up, became the next story that I wanted to tell,” she said.
