The first day of Pitchfork was rainy. The grass was muddy and it was amazing. Black women showed up and showed out. Pitchfork is back at Union Park in Chicago and I arrived just in time to catch the last few songs of Tierra Wack’s set. Her cadence is flawless and her stage presence is just as colorful as her creative videos. Wack was extremely grateful that the crowd stood in the rain to see her perform and she didn’t disappoint.
Dawn Richard was the next set I was able to catch. Over the course of her career it has been great to see Richard develop into this whirlwind genre-bending performer. Her powerful voice resonated through Union Park. Watching her perform is like seeing one of the greats in action. She is clearly the one who has excelled since her Danity Kane days. Her performance would have made Diddy proud.
Once Amber Mark hit the blue stage the rain subsided. Mark brought a contagious joy and effervescence to her performance. She floated through her set performing songs from her first projects 3:33 a.m., Conexâo and her most recent offering Three Dimensions Deep. A stand out moment is when she performed her rendition of Cisco’s hit “Thong Song” to the crowd’s delight.
The Black girls brought the sunshine to an overcast day at Pitchfork and it was dope. Check out a few pictures in the gallery below.
