On Aug. 2, Minnesota resident Diana Armstrong won the Guinness World Record for the “longest fingernails on a pair of hands (female)” and “longest fingernails on a pair of hands ever (female).”
The 63-year-old has a combined nail length of 42 feet, 10.4 inches. The last time Armstrong used a nail clipper was in 1997.
In an interview with Guinness World Records, Armstrong said the reason she never cut them again was because her 16-year-old daughter died from an asthma attack in her sleep. She would manicure Armstrong’s nails every week.
“Anytime I thought about cutting them off, it gave me chills like I’m going through that grief again,” Armstrong said. “I didn’t want to go through that again, so I just kept them. It’s like keeping her close to me.”
Armstrong also discussed the difficulties of grabbing things since her nails are so long.
“If it’s something on the floor, if I ball it up or curl it up, I use my toes,” Armstrong said. “If I have to pick up a phone or something, I’ll cross them up and pick it up.”
Armstrong says that she wants to give people an important message through her nail journey.
“I tell people, you shouldn’t judge people because you don’t know what people have gone through,” Armstrong said.
