Troy Millings and Rashad Bilal represent an entire generation of people seeking financial freedom. Their popular podcast brings in the biggest names in entertainment and business to break down traditionally-complex financial strategies into everyday-digestible vernacular.
The duo spoke at the REVOLT x Xfinity Short & Fresh Film Festival: HBCU Edition with Irv Gotti.
“We are so thankful for partners like Xfinity that support REVOLT in uplifting and providing opportunities for young Black creators,” Morgan Franklin, REVOLT marketing manager, said. “That’s really what this event was about, and we made it happen.”
After the discussion, Millings and Bilal spoke to rolling out regarding the event and financial tips for a more prosperous life.
What are you doing at the Revolt Film Festival?
Troy Millings: We had the opportunity to sit down with a legend, in the video space and entertainment space in Irv Gotti. We had a dope conversation, gave out some game, talked about what he’s going to do in the future, and how he’s going to get to a billion dollars.
Rashad Bilal: For sure, pretty much everything he said. [We] provided some information about selling the catalog, getting multiples, entertainment business, and film business. It was dope.
Why do you think you’re so good at interviewing since you’re not traditional journalists?
TM: I think because we’re inquisitive by nature, right? So we want to know, and I figure when we want to know, the people want to know, too. So we always deliver the questions in a format that comes from a place of trying to understand and learn ourselves so the listeners can get an authentic feel of, “Oh, I had that question, too.”
RB: It’s about us trying to find information. I feel like a lot of times, it’s not that hard if you just ask questions you yourself would want [answers to]. That’s how I approach it.
You both shut down Atlanta for InvestFest a couple of months ago. What’s next?
RB: London. We’re doing an InvestFest Europe in London on Halloween. Then we’ve got Market Mondays live from Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27.
Did you see this coming when you started the podcast? Madison Square Garden? London?
TM: We had a big vision. I mean, every time we hit a new hurdle, we tried to create another one. So yeah, we saw success and the impact was pretty immediate. So yes, pretty much.
What are three pieces of financial advice for Black people in 2022?
TM: Learn how to budget your money, learn how to invest your money and make sure you make your money work for you. You work hard for it, make it work hard for you.
RB: Learn about 3.0 crypto NFTs, the stock market, real estate, but more importantly, just have good money management. That’s truly important. Always try to save more than what you spend, keep track of the money that’s coming in and think long-term.
