North Carolina Central University hosted a powerful event featuring Michael Rainey Jr. from Starz Power Universe. The free event was open to the public, and attendees gathered at the new NCCU Student center to hear about Rainey’s career story and encouraging words.

Rainey is known for playing Tariq St. Patrick on the show, the son of a businessman and politician based in New York City. Rainey grew in stardom from the age of nine when he lived overseas and made an Italian film called Un Altro Mungo. He’s starred in several films since, including Luv, Barbershop, and the NAACP Image Award-winning film The Butler. His artistry caught the attention of many, and his career continues to grow as an actor and podcast host.

“In the industry, you learn a lot of lessons, and like you don’t even notice the lessons that you’ve learned until your plans are actually in motion.” Rainey shared as he reflected on his career. The actor has stood alongside all-star cast members like Meagan Good, Danny Glover, and Common. He is now working on a memoir highlighting his rise to fame and lessons learned along the way. “This is something that stuck with me during season three of ‘Power,’ never to feel too entitled to where you’ve deprived yourself.”

Rock the Lyceum is a North Carolina Central University series where students can engage in conversations about business, entertainment, politics, and more with the nation’s top leaders.
