Richard Roundtree’s final film role is a hilarious adventure unlike any you’ve seen before.
Thelma tells the story of a 93-year-old grandmother (June Squibb) who gets scammed over the phone by someone pretending to be her grandson and decides she isn’t going to let it go. She and her best friend Ben (Roundtree) hit the streets of Los Angeles to get back her money and deal with the culprit once and for all.
Equal parts action-comedy and a heartfelt story, the film is written and directed by Josh Margolin and was inspired in part by real-life events that happened to his grandmother.
After drawing a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Thelma was bought by Magnolia Pictures and serves as the very first leading role for Squibb while also turning out to be the last screen appearance for Roundtree, who died on Oct. 24, 2003.
Alongside Squibb and Roundtree in the film, Clark Gregg, Fred Hechinger, Malcolm McDowell, and Parker Posey come along for the ride.
Thelma hits theaters on June 21.
