Boxing is in Oshae “Suga” Jones‘ blood.
She picked up the sport from her father Otha “Big O” Jones Jr., and found her way to a 2021 Olympic bronze medal for her athletic skill. She’s also a featured fighter in this year’s OTX boxing roster and recently stopped by rolling out to discuss it all.
What are you looking forward to for this season of OTX boxing?
I was originally part of the first boxing show. I’m an OTX original, so I’m just happy to be back again. This time, I’m looking for a stoppage. I’m looking [to] look good the whole time, have better endurance, hype the crowd up, and give people what they want, which is a lot of action.
What is your fighting style?
That question is always hard because I can really adjust to whatever I need to do.
I feel like I have a high I.Q. I’ve been boxing for like 16 years, so I feel like whatever my coach is telling me to do or whatever I see, I could adjust and make that change to be the better fighter.
How did you get into boxing?
I got into boxing because my father boxed. He was my coach, and my older brother boxed, and my younger brother boxed. So basically, it was like a family affair, and I was just expected to box, so I came to the gym one day, and I wanted to work out because I was kind of chubby. I wanted to get my body right, so I walked in, but the first hour is like five to six that’s just working out like hard cardio, so I’m like, “OK. I’m with losing this.”
Then, six to seven is boxing. My dad was like, “Wrap up [your hands].” I was like, “Wrap up?” Wrap what?” Then, he showed me how to wrap my hands. And I just got in [the ring to spar] with a girl. She had been there for like two years, and it was my first day. I beat the brakes off her. Just like natural with a jab. So, from that day forward, I was just expected to keep going.
Why should people watch OTX this season?
They should watch OTX because it’s new. It’s the new trending thing and also giving a lot of athletes who didn’t have that light on them their time to shine. For a lot of good, skilled professional boxers, it’s hard to get that attention, so OTX is giving it to us. I’m pretty sure nobody on the OTX team would want to miss that chance at getting more attention.
Everybody’s going for the kill, and you can see it through the ring, the blood, sweat, and tears. It’s just totally different from everything else.
