Michael Blackson undoubtedly demonstrated exceptional team player skills when he performed at his own comedy roast. The BET weekend in Los Angeles featured a three-night comedy show, culminating in the participation of Chris Spencer and his All-Star friends on the final night of the BET Experience sponsored by Walmart.
Claudia Jordan (former co-host of the popular “Fox Soul” TV show) and Justine Valentine (“Wild’n Out”) are two women who definitely who can hold their own in any room, especially one that includes Melanie Comarcho, Tiffany Haddish, Kym Whitley and any female comic.
Chris Spencer was very strategic in handpicking comedians for the roast. He pulled out all the heavy hitters who weren’t afraid to hit below the belt. DeRay Davis, Buddy Lewis, Corey Holcomb, Tony Roberts, Chris Powell and Na’im Lynn came out with the gloves off. The audience could not control their laughter for the entire two hours.
BET initiated its support for comedians with the launch of “Comic View” in September 1992, which concluded in 2008. This initiative solidified BET’s reputation as one of the leading urban networks for fostering emerging comedians who utilized this platform to advance their careers as entertainers, with some progressing to become actors.
The network announced the return of “Comic View” in 2014 which went on to become the launching pad for comedians like Cedric the Entertainer, Gary Owen, DL Hughley, Sommore and one of the funniest female comics Leslie Black. Michael Blackson currently has his own show on BET which is filmed on the Tyler Perry Studios lot in Atlanta.
