On Dec. 20, the highly anticipated podcast “Queen of the Yard” officially launched, paving the way for a unique exploration of the rich traditions surrounding HBCU pageant queens. While the associated dramedy is still in pre-production, the podcast aims to connect generations of HBCU queens, allowing them to share their inspiring stories.

A tribute to HBCU Pageant Queens

“Queen of the Yard” is co-created by award-winning filmmaker Stacey L. Holman and writer/producer Tracee Loran. Together, they are dedicated to highlighting the experiences of HBCU Campus Queens, often referred to as “HBCU Baddies.” The podcast is set to celebrate the journeys of these queens, focusing on themes of sisterhood and the timeless experiences that define HBCU life.

As Holman stated in a press release, “Each Campus Queen has a story worth celebrating. The podcast gives voice to these journeys while underscoring the cultural significance of this legacy.” This initiative not only honors the queens but also aims to educate listeners about the true steps and challenges involved in wearing the crown.

Connecting generations through storytelling

The podcast will serve as a platform for HBCU queens to discuss their experiences, share insights and reflect on the impact of their roles within their institutions. The creators aim to showcase the dynamism and grace of these women, who represent their schools with pride and dignity during their reigns. The discussions will delve into the responsibilities and expectations that come with being a Campus Queen, providing a deeper understanding of this cherished tradition.

Supporting the next generation of queens

In conjunction with the podcast, the creators have launched a Crowdfundr campaign to raise $35,000 for the production of a five-minute short film. This concept film will focus on a young HBCU freshman navigating her entry into the pageant scene. The completion of this film is crucial for the pitching process of the television show, which aims to bring the stories of HBCU queens to the small screen.

Loran emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “This is more than a TV series; it’s a love letter to HBCUs and the extraordinary women who uphold their legacy.” The podcast and the upcoming show are designed to uplift and empower Black women, showcasing their leadership and resilience.

Giving back to the community

In a commendable effort, a portion of the donations received through the Crowdfundr campaign will be directed to the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. This initiative aims to not only highlight the triumphs of HBCU queens but also to support Black women in all forms of leadership. By contributing to this cause, supporters can help uplift the voices of women who are making significant strides in their communities.

Join the movement

As the “Queen of the Yard” podcast continues to grow, it invites listeners to engage with the stories of HBCU queens and celebrate their contributions to culture and society. The podcast is more than just a series; it is a movement to honor the legacy of HBCUs and the remarkable women who have shaped their history.
