In a shocking incident that highlights the ongoing issues of racism and violence against Black individuals, a 15-year-old White boy, John P. Sheeran, has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a racially motivated attack on a Black teenager in Chatham, Massachusetts. The attack, which occurred in July 2023, involved Sheeran allegedly attempting to drown the victim while hurling racial slurs and throwing stones at him.
The incident unfolds
On July 19, 2023, the victim, who was wearing a life jacket due to his inability to swim, was invited to Goose Pond by a friend. Upon arrival, he encountered Sheeran and another White male, who began to harass him. The victim reported that he had asked them not to touch his borrowed bike, which led to a barrage of rocks being thrown at him. In an attempt to escape the harassment, he donned his life jacket and entered the water, only to be pursued by Sheeran.
According to police reports, Sheeran swam out to the victim and forcibly pulled him underwater multiple times while using derogatory language, including the n-word. The victim, terrified and struggling to breathe, shouted for Sheeran to stop, but his pleas were met with laughter from the assailants. One of them even mockingly referred to him as “George Floyd,” a reference that underscores the racial dynamics at play and the insensitivity of the attackers.
Community response and intervention
Fortunately, the victim’s cries for help did not go unheard. A good Samaritan on the beach witnessed the attack and intervened, helping the victim back to safety. This individual later recounted hearing the victim plead with Sheeran not to splash or push him due to his inability to swim, further illustrating the severity of the situation.

Sheeran’s actions have led to serious legal repercussions. He has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, categorized as a “youthful offender.” This designation allows the court to decide whether to sentence him as a juvenile or as an adult, a decision that will be made during his sentencing on Feb. 5, 2025.
