Miss Kaniyah is gearing up for the release of her upcoming EP. She is from D.C. and brings a unique sound, especially coming from a Black girl. She started rapping in 2018, but because of life she put music on the back burner for a while. Now she’s back and ready for the world to see her blow up. She stopped by rolling out to perform some music from her upcoming EP.
Is your sound typical of other D.C. artists?
No[,] the D.C. sound is very different. It’s very unique. But a lot of people from D.C. are very talented. Even when I was coming up in D.C., I never had like the typical D.C. sound. I just always had more of like a commercial pop sound. You got to actually aspire to be that. I always wanted to be like a huge star. So I think when you think of huge stars, most of their music is very commercial.
What do you hope listeners take away from your upcoming EP?
I hope that the new listeners really just can get a peek into my world. Both of those songs that we just did today are on the EP. It’s only three other songs. Very short, very cutesy, very demure. But I also feel like it’s just five striking songs that show who I am as an artist. They show my versatility, show my power. And outside of that, it just shows that you don’t have to be put in the Black box depending on [what] you look like, whether you’re, like, Black or, like, urban or, like, whatever. Like, you can do whatever it is that you want to do.
You have a song with Dess Dior coming up on the EP right?
Yes I do. The name of the song is “I Wanna F–k.” It’s a little explicit. It’s not as bad as you would think. But I’m actually very excited to collab on that song with her. She did really well. So I’m excited for people to hear it. And most women [and men] that I play [it for], they just love it because it’s a real scenario, real situation. I’ll just say for the ladies, if you’re looking for strength when it’s surrounding that, then this is the song for you. Just about having a little bit more willpower, you know?
What song are you most excited for the people to hear?
I love all my songs. And that’s why I put them all specifically on a project together. Because I created all these songs at different times. But I think I’m honestly most excited for people to hear “Hell Yeah.” I feel like that type of record coming from a Black girl. Like a Black girl from the hood. I think it’s very, very important. It’s very fresh. It’s very clean. And I think [what] we’re lacking nowadays in music, it’s just real music. So I’m really excited for people to hear that and hear it coming from someone that looks like me.
