Fast & Furious 6 ended with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the older brother of Owen Shaw, killing Han in Japan. In Furious 7, we pick up with Shaw on the warpath seeking to destroy those responsible for his brother’s injuries, which first leads him to Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson).
After a great fight scene between these two, Hobbs summons Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), who warns him of Shaw. The plot thickens during the first encounter between Shaw and Toretto, and off we go around the world on a chase that takes us to some visually appealing locations, including Tokyo and Abu Dhabi, as the crew gets together “one last time.”
In addition to the cast of characters we’ve grown to love through the first six Fast films, including Toretto, Hobbs, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese) and Tej (Ludacris), the film introduces numerous new characters and has its fair share of cameos. Cult action film hero Kurt Russell appears as Mr. Nobody, Djimon Hounsou plays Jakande, and the beautiful Nathalie Emmanuel of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” fame plays Ramsey. There are also cameos from recording artists Romeo, Santos and Iggy Izalea; and the UFC’s Ronda Rousey, who has a fight scene in the film that is on par with any of the others in the film. Furious 7 is definitely the thrill ride that we have all come to expect from the Fast franchise.
Paul Walker was on the minds of many while watching Furious 7, and this writer was certainly one of them. With his tragic death on Nov. 30, 2013, ironically, in a car crash, we wondered how he would be incorporated into the film. With the help of his two brothers, Caleb and Cody, they were able to finish his scenes and the film. A fitting “For Paul” tribute ends the film that may leave many with red eyes after it is over.
