KRS-One has been one of the most celebrated emcees in the game for almost 30 years, and he reminded everyone why during a packed performance at SOBs. Fresh off a stint performing around Europe, the legendary former Boogie Down Productions front man took the stage in Manhattan last night (August 15) for an explosive show presented by AllHipHop that combined classic hits with new material from his latest project, “Never Forget.” Mixing the new stuff, like tracks “Nina” (about a man’s love affair with weapons) and “Invaders” (about the hypocrisy of U.S. immigration policies towards Mexico) with fan favorites like “I’m Still #1” and “South Bronx,” The Teacha proved that he’s still one of the more kinetic performers in hip-hop.
He spent a lot of time on stage conversing with the audience about the state of hip-hop, the world, and his own legacy. He revisited the late 90s during one moment of critique, beginning with a “F–k MTV” and a “F–k Hot 97,” acknowledging that he hasn’t embraced mainstream hip-hop outlets since 1997–and he threw some darts at two famous Hot 97 radio personalities. “Once Funkmaster Flex stopped playing my music,” he said, referencing exactly when he lost the radio love. “Once Angie Martinez forgot her roots.”
