Island Def Jam, G.O.O.D. Music
He makes it look easy. On his third effort, Graduation,
Kanye West adds a few tweaks to his distinctive sound, but still offers
up a soulful and seamless record that succeeds on almost every level.
On the fist-pumping opening single, “Stronger,” he borrows a few tricks
from Timbaland’s digital bag, but maintains his own soulful foundation
throughout the album. Mos Def drops by for some bizarre fun on “Drunk
& Hot Girls,” and Lil Wayne gives an assist on the surging “Barry
Bonds.” But the real standouts include “Flashing Lights” and “The Good
Life” which illustrates the album’s theme: it ain’t bad being famous. -dusty culpepper
