Mother Drowns 3 Children, Self; 4th Child Flees

LaShanda Armstrong

Lashanda Armstrong had become mentally incapable of taking care of her children. The 25-year-old mother of four committed an atrocious act after getting into an argument with the father of her youngest three children, Jean Pierre.

According to reports, Armstrong stormed out of her home and drove away with her four children in her minivan on April 12. She drove toward the Hudson River, accelerated off a boat ramp and plunged into the river.

Armstrong and her 5-year-old, 2-year-old and 11-month-old drowned. But her 10-year-old son was able to climb out of the van, swim out of the Hudson River and save himself. A passerby found the dazed, almost incoherent boy and took him to a nearby fire station.

This traumatic experience most likely will affect him for the rest of his life, and it will be important for him to undergo counseling to deal with his feelings and to help him repair emotionally.

His mother could have used similar treatment. Armstrong, who attended community college and worked, was dealing with the pressures of being a single mother with very little help. Her depression and mental instability caused her to do the unthinkable. –a.r.

I agree with you. When I heard the news, I automatically thought this was done by a white woman and was shocked that it wasn’t. Just so sad and I will never understand why adults kill their kids.

        • Anonymous on April 14, 2011 at 11:19 pm

Only reason why I mentioned race is I couldn’t believe it.

Sometimes, when women do this, it is an act of anger against the other parent, mental illness or total hopelessness and despair. They are not thinking clearly or rationalizing. Have you ever been so angry or hostile about something that you “see red?” You barely remember any details around you once you calm down. I think, in these women’s minds, it’s that times 100 or 1000. What’s frightening is that this trend is growing. I can think of several other recent cases in which black mothers kill their children. Most times, poverty … and going to school, now that I think about it are involved. People these days aren’t handling stress well… at all. God has those little angels in His arms.

I HATED THIS STORY MY HEART IS SADDEN.

Why does the headline tell us that the mother was black? That is not a proper, correct, or acceptable way to write a news headline. What does the story have to do with the person’s race? The only time it is considered acceptable to identify someone’s race in a headline (or the body of the story) is if the issue of race is relevant to the story, such as a news story about the rioting in Los Angeles which resulted after the LAPD officers were acquitted in the Rodney King beating. A headline like “Black Mother Drowns 3 Children, Self; 4th Child Flees” used to be fairly common, prior to the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This style is completely out of date, antiquated, and racist.

Please leave those kind of comments to Sharpton and Jackson. Doesn’t matter where in the story the race is mentioned, the fact is: a young BLACK mother killed herself and three of her children!

By the way, I’ve never personally seen the headline: “Black Mother Drowns 3 Children, Self; 4th Child Flees” prior to the 1960’s and I lived through that era.

well when susan smith drowned her children they didnt put white woman drowns kids & blame it on a black man knowing dam well her ass had did da shit. i agree they could have kept da color out of it just as they would have done if da mother was white!!!! uncle chuck

      • Cherie on April 14, 2011 at 9:37 pm

You’re right, Chuck. It doesn’t matter where in the story race is mentioned. What matters is that it was mentioned at all, when it has absolutely nothing to do with the events that happened. I have a degree in journalism, so it’s not like I’m just expressing some bogus opinion about this. I actually know what I’m talking about. How many times do white women do something similar, but you don’t see race mentioned? And of course you haven’t personally seen the headline “Black Mother Drowns 3 Children, Self; 4th Child Flees” prior to the 1960s. You just saw it today. And incidentally, it’s not just Sharpton and Jackson who make “those kind of comments.” I’m WHITE!

she should of kept her legs close if she wasnt ready or gave them u to someone responsible

  7. Angela on April 14, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Why must this article title list her race? she is a mother that drowned her children not “BLACK” mother! geez. Regardless it is sad that she would do this.

    • Monique Boea on April 14, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Angela that is the first thing I thought also when I read this. The article is just written wrong period as if she did this on purpose. Obviosly there was something terribly wrong with this woman.

      • Jroberts0107 on April 23, 2011 at 6:18 am

This was on purpose, this wasn’t an accident!

It so breaks my heart for these babies. Why must a mom kill her babies. Just give them to me or some other woman who would dearly love and take wonderful care of them. Couldn’t she see how selfish and heinous a thing she was doing. I will be praying for her surviving son. God set your angels around this young boy Lord. Raise him up to never let this horrible act affect but let him be highly favored by you and all who cross his path in life. Raise him up to be more than he could be. Let true love permeate his whole life and may his heart be tender to receive all you have for him. Thank you Lord Jesus. Amen.

Now that the word “black” has been removed from the headline, perhaps the entire article should be rewritten. It contains several of the reporter’s personal opinions, such as, the 25-year-old mother of four “committed an atrocious act of selfishness” and “this traumatic experience most likely will affect him for the rest of his life, and it will be important for him to undergo counseling to deal with his feelings and to help him repair emotionally” and “his mother could have used similar treatment. Her depression and mental instability caused her to do the unthinkable.” This is not acceptable journalism, by any standard. A good reporter does not include his or her personal opinions in a story, or make judgmental insinuations, but simply reports the facts.

  10. Butterface81 on April 15, 2011 at 2:00 am

BECAUSE WHEN THE STORY FIRST APPEARED, THERE WAS JUST A PICTURE OF THE WATER AND NOT OF THE MOTHER, AND ROLLING OUT FOCUSES ON BLACK NEWS. THAT’S WHY!!!! DON’T YOU HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO PICK ABOUT. GEEZ!!!

  11. Butterface81 on April 15, 2011 at 2:02 am

ANGELA AND MONIQUE, DID YOU READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE? THE LAST GRAPH SAYS, His mother could have used similar treatment. Armstrong, who attended community college and worked, was dealing with the pressures of being a single mother with very little help. Her depression and mental instability caused her to do the unthinkable.
