It must be one special movie to get veteran actress Nicole Ari Parker this giddy. But that’s precisely where she found herself when asked about her latest film, 35 & Ticking. The film, which is set to hit theaters May 20, is a romantic comedy, directed by Russ Parr, surrounding the travails of four men and women approaching the monumental age of 35. As one of the film’s main characters, Parker was more than happy to share her thoughts on both the film and on the beauty of black film-making. –djr
How excited are you about the release of the film?
I’m very excited. It is always an exciting time when you get to be a part of a project that you believe in, and I definitely believe in this film.
This was, by no means, a big-budget film. Why did so many good actors sign on at a reduced rate?
Because we believe in the project. As an artist, when the material is good, you want to sink your teeth in it and produce something great. When I first read the script, I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of.
Do you think that our community will support the film?
I hope so. I have great faith in our people, and I’ve been seeing a stronger effort by us to support our films. This is definitely worth their time, so I hope they take the time to go out and see what I think is a great film.
