Can Herman Cain's Wife Take the Heat?
Gloria and Herman Cain

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain trotted out his wife, Gloria, to even the score after three accusers told of his unwelcome advances, but she refused to talk about it.

According to reports, Gloria Cain canceled an interview with Fox News. She was scheduled to appear on “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

Cain promised Fox News: “You will meet my wife publicly in an exclusive interview that we are currently planning and anticipating, but you won’t see my family out on the campaign trail on a day-to-day basis.”

Late last week a third accuser surfaced and described “situations in which she said Cain told her that he had confided to colleagues how attractive she was and invited her to his corporate apartment outside work,” according to reports.

Another accuser received a cash settlement in 1999, according Joel P. Bennett the attorney for the accuser. The incident took place at the National Restaurant Association–the woman worked there while Cain headed the organization — and although a settlement was reached, Cain did not admit wrongdoing.

This statement was released by the National Restaurant Association:

“Based upon the information currently available, we can confirm that more than a decade ago, in July 1999, Mr. Bennett’s client filed a formal internal complaint, in accordance with the Association’s existing policies prohibiting discrimination and harassment. Mr. Herman Cain disputed the allegations in the complaint. The Association and Mr. Bennett’s client subsequently entered into an agreement to resolve the matter, without any admission of liability. Mr. Cain was not a party to that agreement. The agreement contains mutual confidentiality obligations. Notwithstanding the Association’s ongoing policy of maintaining the privacy of all personnel matters, we have advised Mr. Bennett that we are willing to waive the confidentiality of this matter and permit Mr. Bennett’s client to comment. As indicated in Mr. Bennett’s statement, his client prefers not to be further involved with this matter and we will respect her decision.

Cain is still riding high with news that he was tied with Mitt Romney for the lead in a key Iowa poll and won’t allow these accusations to slow him down.

Cain’s campaign said the candidate wants to focus on important issues: “We look forward to focusing our attention on the real issues impacting this country — like fixing this broken economy and putting Americans back to work through our 9-9-9 Plan, as well as strengthening national security.”

Only time will tell if Hermain Cain’s wife Gloria will stand by her man publicly — although Cain wrote in his autobiography, This is Herman Cain!, that Gloria didn’t immediately agree with his political aspirations.

“Gloria didn’t immediately jump up and down and cheer. In fact she was terrified! Scared to death!” Cain noted in his book. “That was because of the widely held perception of what it’s like to be in politics — of what it can do to your family and to you, the candidate.”

and if it will make a difference in the campaign.
