‘Ted’: Movie Review

'Ted': Movie Review

Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane
Studio: Universal Pictures

When 8-year-old John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) wishes that his teddy bear could talk to him, his wish is granted. Fast-forward 20 years and John and his teddy, “Ted” are all grown up. Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, has become the man your mother warned you about — a womanizing, foul-mouthed marijuana toker. Ted’s cuteness factor does not cancel out his obnoxiousness, so John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) rightly insists that it’s time to kick the stuffed animal out. The downside is John’s bond with Ted is so strong that he really doesn’t want to kick his old friend to the curb. Of course, the real question is not whether John will cut the umbilical cord with his furry friend, but why after more than two decades he is so emotionally stunted that his best friend is a toy. And how did this grown man even get a girlfriend? The answers to those mysteries are revealed with equal parts hubris and humor. –p.d. lee
