A new survey by Kelton Research found that more than 80 million Americans believe in UFOs, and 79 percent of Americans believe the government has kept information about them a secret.
Respondents were also asked which candidate for president is better suited to handle an alien invasion. The overwhelming answer: President Obama.
Nearly two-thirds or 65 percent of Americans think President Obama would be better suited than Mitt Romney to handle an alien invasion.
“President Obama and his staff might have to be on high alert for an alien attack if the predictions of many Americans come to fruition. Nearly one in five (19 percent) think Washington, D.C., is the most likely landing zone for a UFO.” pollsters said in a statement.
Three out of four Americans (77 percent) think there are signs that suggest aliens have visited the Earth. One in 10 respondents say they have personally seen an alien spacecraft.
The poll was released as President Obama and Governor Romney remain locked in a tight race for the White House, and just months after the Obama administration issued a statement concerning life forms from other planets.
“The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race,” wrote Phil Larson of the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. “In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public’s eye.”
When asked what they would do if they did happen across an alien, 22 percent of Americans surveyed said they would try to befriend the alien, 15 percent would run away, 13 percent would lock their doors, and 2 percent would try to inflict bodily harm.
