The Lack of Women

Without beautiful women to walk it, the red carpet lacks flair. The small number of female participants was another major negative that stood out about the BET Hip Hop Awards. Hip-hop has always been a male-dominated genre. But unfortunately, the genre has digressed since the days of Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Roxanne Shante. Either female rappers aren’t being developed by record labels, or they aren’t given the chance to bring their voices to hip-hop.

This year, the BET Hip Hop Awards resembled a boys club. Brianna Perry was the only female rapper to walk the red carpet and Missy Elliot was the only female rapper to perform at the ceremony.

However, Eve, Iggy Azalea, K’La, Angel Haze and Brianna Perry are all featured on the BET Hip Hop Cyphers.

In BET’s defense, Nicki Minaj was invited to the show but did not attend.
