Beyoncé, Draya, Malinda Williams: African American women’s image dilemma

It will be a sexy fairy tale where they’ll showcase their theatrical talents as well as their physique wearing designer Tracy Reese couture. These ladies could captivate the imagination of not just black men and women but of the entire country if given an opportunity, perhaps bigger than a “black” movie with minimal purpose and minute budget. Beyoncé could even executive produce the soundtrack.

Reality TV has gotten so much criticism because there is nothing left to the imagination. Scantily clad is the norm; disrobing lacks meaning.

Progress is being made yes but insults to our character are running at a faster pace. We hope that in time we can have conversations with executives who control images on the silver screen and share that we prefer roles with integrity for both African American women and men to play. Meagan Good in NBC’s “Deception” is good example. Michelle Obama is our best first lady ever. Malinda Williams stood by her man, found love twice and started a family. Draya is at the beginning of what could be a phenomenal career. Beyoncé has the power to adopt a building at an academic institution like Spelman College in honor of her mother and father or child — for the arts — like the Cosbys.
