One of the first examples of “alternative hip-hop,” the J.B.’s debut album announced the arrival of one of hip-hop’s most celebrated crews: The Native Tongues. Before De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah snatched the baton and ran with it, the J.B.’s blend of humor, Afrocentricity and positivity set the stage. Definitely an underrated debut.
