Fifty years ago on Wednesday, Aug. 28, the greatest single event in the cause of equality, justice and freedom in America took place when more than a quarter of a million people spilled onto the Mall on Washington in the District of Columbia for the March on Washington.
Tens of thousands stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in an event that was, along with the confluence of other happenings, that led to the successful passage of President Kennedy’s Civil Rights Bill in 1964 (with a big assist from President Lyndon B. Johnson after JFK’s assassination) and Dr. Martin Luther King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
