Albany State avenged its earlier season loss to Miles College, but did so on the biggest possible stage — the Southeastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game in Atlanta.
The Golden Rams (5-5) won on 4-yard touchdown run by junior speedster Adrian Alexander (Southwest Macon) midway through the fourth quarter and hung on to defeat the Golden Bears (8-3), 17-14, Saturday night at Lakewood Stadium.
The night began with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed throwing out the coin toss and the legends of the SIAC, Fort Valley state stars Greg Lloyd of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tyrone Poole of the New England Patriots being honored.
Rams trailed a touchdown entering the fourth quarter but reeled off scored 10 straight points to complete one of the best turnaround seasons in program history with a 17-14 victory, winning the team’s 20th conference title.
The Rams rebounded from a horrid 1-4 and went on to win their fifth straight game and, simultaneously, avenged a 2011 loss to the Golden Bears in the inaugural SIAC championship game.
