Three privileged white students filed a complaint against a black college professor who discussed race in the classroom. According to the college newspaper at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, English professor Shannon Gibney held a lecture on race when she was interrupted by three white students.
The students wondered why race had to be discussed. One white student told Gibney, “It’s like people are trying to say that white men are always the villains, the bad guys.”
Gibney told the white students they could file a complaint if they were upset. The three white students went to school officials and filed a complaint. In November, school officials reprimanded Gibney for her race-based discussion.
Gibney was also told by the college that she could risk further punishment for violating the privacy of the white students by mentioning them during an interview with the school’s paper.
Gibney has submitted a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for workplace discrimination at the college.
