Groupon is adding 20,000 more hotels to its Groupon Getaways travel portal just in time for spring and summer travel planning.
The offering will be available first in the U.S. and Canada via the web and Groupon’s mobile app before being launched globally later this year with the new hotels coming available by way of their relationship with Expedia. To encourage users to go to Groupon for their travel searches instead of Expedia or any other source, Groupon is offering a 5 percent rebate in the form of “Groupon Bucks” for each reservation made that can be used toward future Groupon purchases.
All hotels are chosen by the Getaways team based on price, star rating and location. In addition, most hotels in the Getaways marketplace have a booking calendar, which eliminates the need for vouchers and lets consumers select and confirm the exact dates they want to travel based on price and room availability. The most popular destinations in the marketplace include New York, Paris, Cancun, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Diego and Chicago.
Groupon is hoping that tapping into the travel industry, worth trillions of dollars globally, will help increase the company revenue which showed sales of $595.1 million during the last reported quarterly results in November 2013. Overall the Groupon Getaways marketplace app is expected to save travelers a discount of about 60 percent.
