A Massachusetts woman accused of beating and strangling her pregnant friend, then cutting the fetus from her womb, will face a jury starting today, almost five years after the gruesome crime.
Julie Corey, 39, of Worcester, Mass. killed Darlene Haynes, who was eight months pregnant. She made a 9-inch incision in Haynes’ abdomen and took her fetus. The baby girl survived. Corey took the baby home and told her boyfriend, Alex Dion, that the baby was theirs, according to police reports.
Corey has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murder charges. Michael Wilcox, one of Corey’s lawyers, declined to comment Friday. However, another lawyer, attorney Louis Aloise, representing the woman stated, “The defense is she didn’t do it, someone else did it. She had nothing to do with the homicide at all, Corey came into possession of Haynes’ baby ‘by lawful means’.”
The girl, now 4, is living with her biological father, Roberto Rodriguez.
Corey has been in state prison awaiting her murder trial.
