Like any respectable music diva, Rihanna has garnered a strong LGBT fan base over the years, thanks to her chart-topping hits, brazen and unapologetic attitude, and support for the LGBT community. But her loyalty to her gay fan base came into question this week when one of her Instagram followers accused her of gay bashing him online.
Earlier this week, an Instagram user called Benvoy K. Seals posted a screenshot of a short but hostile exchange that he had with Rihanna on her Instagram page. Seals commented on one of the singer’s photos that she was “going to hell.”
Well, Rihanna didn’t take too kindly to Seal’s comment and she shockingly implied that he was going to hell because he’s gay.
Soon after, Seals posted the photo online, it went viral and begun to spur a surging backlash against Rihanna for her apparent anti-gay comment.
However, the story took a surprising turn yesterday when Seals spoke to TMZ and told the site that the image was fake and that he photoshopped it to make it look like Rihanna made the anti-gay comment.
“I lied. I don’t know why. I just did,” he said.
Seals says that he received thousands of death threats after he posted the photo, which he’s now taken down. Seals has now posted a new photo that reads, “Rihanna would never say something like that.”
We’re not sure Seals faked the image or why he decided to come clean about it, and Rihanna has yet to comment on the controversy surrounding it; however, it’s safe to say that Rihanna’s title as a gay icon is safe, once again.
