How long have you been an owner?
I’ve been an owner for 24 years.
What made you become an owner?
I became an owner, first because I viewed ownership as a great vehicle for financial independence, as well as it gave me a platform with which I could bring dignity and respect back to the craft of barbering. Also to be able to help people build or rebuild their lives by training them to be independent contractors.
Do you consider yourself a barber as well as an owner?
I’m absolutely a barber and have done so for 27 years.
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
I see the brand that is Tony’s Barber Studio expanding to several other locations within the city of Atlanta, as well as establishing seminars for the purpose of training barbers that are new to the industry. Also, teaching them about more than tools and technique, but about how not to just exist in this industry, but to thrive!
How do you maintain a peaceful environment for your staff and clients?
It all starts with our staff of professional barbers, Rico Lawson, Pam Green, Tremaine Young, Scott Echols, Kevin Wesley, Marvin Jones and our nail technician Unique Wright. They’re all mature and professional people, who get that the client comes first, also prior to opening the studio my wife, Lorna, and I had several meetings with them to make sure they all understood ownership guidelines and expectations.
When and why did you start cutting hair?
I began cutting my own hair when I was about 13, because I wanted to be groomed for school and church. My father would only take me once every three weeks, so I saved my money and my best friend, Roderick Ewing, and I began to practice on each other and every cut got better and better.
I absolutely welcome clients of all ages, but the average age of my clients range between 25-50 years of age.
What kind of clippers do you recommend for a precise line?
I recommend finishing every cut with a hot lather and razor, other than that, my clipper/outliner of choice is Andis Outliner II.
What is the appropriate sterilizer that you’d recommend for current and new barbers to use on men of color?
I actually prefer a mixture that consists of mostly witch hazel, some peroxide and just a little alcohol, with a touch of your favorite oil for the sake of fragrance.
How do feel about mobile shops?
I love the idea of mobile barber shops and I welcome anything innovative that makes receiving our service more convenient to the client.
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in customer service first, I acknowledge to anyone that will listen that my employer is every client that takes a seat my chair. Second, I specialize in cutting all types of hair and especially precision cuts, such as all fades, even cuts, etc.
Do you only cut black hair?
I cut all hair types and textures. In this day and time, you must be diverse.
