Nicki Minaj has been busy promoting the new film, The Other Woman, in which she has a role alongside Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton and Leslie Mann. Minaj attended the movie premiere in California for the film that hits theaters April 25. As she sat with MTV News, the rapper discussed her recent change in appearance.
Minaj discussed the decision to go back to her roots, and how it will translate to her new music. “It’s not a makeover, it’s just coming full circle,” she said of the change.
“I went so far to the other side that there’s only one place to go from there,” Minaj said to MTV. “You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, ‘Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing absolutely nothing will shock them even more.’ ”
Minaj translated this change to the music she’s been doing, “In terms of the music, with ‘Chi-raq’ and ‘Lookin’ A–‘: yeah, they’re definitely back to my hip-hop roots. And I don’t think it’s something that I’m necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that’s just the songs that I’ve been writing.”
As for whether or not the YMCMB first lady will repeat a pop-driven track like “Super Bass” Minaj responds: “Hell no.”
