‘SNL’ writer Leslie Jones sparks criticism over ‘No. 1 slave draft pick’ comment

Laugh at my pain works for Kevin Hart but it isn’t for comedy writer Leslie Jones. This past weekend on “Saturday Night Live,” the writer joked during the Weekend News Update segment, “Back in the slave days, I would have never been single. I’m 6 feet tall, and I’m strong, Colin. … I mean, look at me, I’m a Mandingo. I’m just saying that back in the slave days, my love life would have been way better. Massah would have hooked me up with the best brotha on the plantation. … I would be the No. 1 slave draft pick. All of the plantations would want me.”

Some are arguing “SNL” was not the proper venue for this social commentary. Jones defends the comment on Twitter saying that she was expressing a lifetime of pain and Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Kanye West nor Jay Z would have received praise and been called “brilliant.”

Check out her response on Twitter to the backlash.

lighten up yall its just a joke …. she is a good comedian .. i quest she did go hard on labeling us as mandingos , and our women of color are prideful women .. in her defense she is speaking of the pass . something we been over come is slavery .. no one is gonna slave no one again for sure . .so we are not worried about that … but with all the recent racism on our color .. donald stevino and the rest of the kkk… and all the bad comments made towards our beloved president .. it does make you think if she should have said it at this time if she did that in stand up no one would have laughted at her .. so .. .. the majority of blacks dotn want to be reminded of the most tragic time in our history …. i mean a jewish person would never make that kind of joke for the hollocaust victimes . IT WOULD BE A NATION OUTRAGE ….. so this could help leslies career or hurt it …. not sure .. but she makes me laught more than any comedian i know of
