But it’s not just acting that you enjoy. You also sing and do a variety of other things. How do these different sides of entertainment fulfill you as an artist?
When it comes to acting, I’ve always had a passion for entertaining, and for making people laugh. So acting does that for me, and it allows me to become someone else for a day. That’s a lot of fun to me. It’s something that I’ve always loved — even when I was little. It was never forced on me. I knew what I was doing at a young age, and I loved it. On the music side, I really want to come out as an artist because I want people to see who I really am. I’m not acting in my music — I’m myself. So being able to speak directly to people, and let them know what’s on my mind, and what I’m going through is something that I would really like to happen. If I am able to do both [singing and acting], that’s just going to be awesome for me.
What’s your musical style?
It’s kind of alternative, electronic R&B. I like beats, and I like the sound of live instruments, so I want to mesh the two together. I love really hard, edgy beats, with my melodies placed on top.
Are you still in the studio working on your debut?
I’m in the process now of creating that sound. The producer that I’m working with now is very talented, and he gets the vision that I’m going for. When I first started on this, some people didn’t get what I was going for. I’m not going to come out and be a Chris Brown or a Miguel — I’m going to come out and do what I do. I listen to so many different musical genres anyway, that I just want to be able to fuse all of my favorites within my music.
You said that you like really hard, edgy beats, but in person you seem more laid-back. Is the music your way of showing a side of you that’s never been seen before?
In person, I’m always smiling and I’m a very happy-go-lucky type of guy. But artistically, I tend to be drawn to the darker things. Even in film, I prefer watching darker movies to comedies. I guess it’s my way of balancing myself out. So my music plays as a balancing act to the side that people see on TV.
