Why do you think that you were able to be so normal and well-adjusted after being a child star?
From the get-go it was something that I wanted to do. It wasn’t something that was forced on me, so I knew what it was and I approached it as a job, even as a kid. And then, what I did in high school was I took a little break. I just went to school, played football, and just lived a normal life. I think that helped a lot. It also helped that I have a great family, and that my faith has played such a huge role in my life. When you’re growing up in the public eye, you have to realize that everything that you do will be scrutinized. With that said, I think it’s wise to grow up in private, away from the cameras. You’ll never see me stumbling out of a club. If I’m going to have fun, I’ll be with friends in a very private setting. I don’t need to be seen by people.
I’m sure you see child stars that have come after you that don’t necessarily follow that same philosophy.
Yeah, I see it all the time, and I often find myself wishing that people would be a little bit smarter about their situations. Take Justin Bieber, for instance. He continues to have to grow up in the public eye, and as a result you always see him in the news. I don’t necessarily blame him for all of the drama because he’s had to literally grow up with cameras in his face 24-7. Media was a little different when I was transitioning into adulthood, so it wasn’t quite as bad. Honestly, I’m just so thankful that I have always had the right people around me to protect me from that. I’m very thankful.
