“Fast food got me sick / these (people) think they slick / by trying to make this bulls— affordable…” – CeeLo (Goodie MoB) “Soul Food” 1995
Though the common perception is that it is expensive to eat healthy, many will be surprised to learn that a lot of healthier foods are actually comparable in price to most of our cherished junk foods, according to a recent study. Believe it or not, you in fact don’t have to reach for the overpriced “natural” stuff when shopping with your health in mind. “Losing weight doesn’t need to be all about organic vegetables and grass-finished beef,” says Mike Roussell, Ph.D., a nutrition advisor.
Next time you’re in the grocery store trying to do right, keep in mind that inexpensive yet healthy things like vegetables, leans meats, and whole grains, which are all packed with nutrients such as fiber and protein, actually keep you fuller much longer than processed foods that are full of sugar, sodium and preservatives. And if you’re full, you won’t eat as much, and in turn you save money. Another obvious, but still awesome tip is to swap the sugary drinks and soda for water. Most big grocery stores sell spring water by the gallon for less than a dollar.
Here are some more inexpensive, yet healthier foods to add to your shopping lists:
• Fruits: apple, bananas, grapes
• Vegetables: canned, frozen, fresh
• Grains: brown rice, oats
• Protein: beans, eggs, milk
