Singer-songwriter Luke James dropped his debut album Sept. 23, and the eponymous LP has served notice that the man behind hits for Chris Brown and Justin Bieber was more than ready for his time to shine. The New Orleans-born star spoke with rolling out about his moment and how prepared he was for it.

“Rather than excited, I was just ready,” James shares. “Just ready to put it out and give people what they’ve been waiting on. It’s the prelude to the absolute story of Luke James. So I hope it establishes me as an artist to look forward to for many years to come.”

As to why it took his debut album so long to materialize, James has a succinct answer.

“Too many chefs in the kitchen,” he says directly. “That’s it.”

“You have to fight for it, that’s all. You have to stand on your beliefs,” the singer explains. “The album has come out when it was supposed to come out. No sooner. But I’m grateful and my team is awesome and my label is beautiful. We’re about to win. Straight up.”

“I can’t ever doubt myself. Never,” James says. “I’m always going forward and there’s no limits. I just have to stand my ground, that’s all.”

“Doubts may happen,” he clarifies. “But if you surround yourself with like-minded people who believe in you and who you believe in and you have faith, all will be well. Nothing worth having happens without struggle, so stay prepared. You have to get ready and stay ready.”

And now, with his self-titled debut in stores and his name on the rise, James said his proudest moment was a simple one.

“Seeing my mom with the album in her hand, after all these years, all that noise and all that racket I was making in the house,” he shares. “That’s what’s worth it.”
