Shockwaves were sent through the transgender community last week when news hit that Leelah Alcorn, a transgender female teen, had committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving truck. Since then, outrage has surged over the bullying that Alcorn endured before her suicide, and now, sadly, it seems that the bullying hasn’t stopped because a hateful Facebook group recently popped up in which users were blasting Alcorn.
According to Gay Star News, The Facebook community page was titled “Go truck yourself,” which made mockery of Alcorn’s death, and the page address included the term “nomoredegenerates.”
The community page even goes so far as to place the comment “go truck yourself” over a photo of Alcorn as well as showcasing several photos related to Alcorn’s death.
And the page members also took aim at the transgender community as a whole, posting transphobic, homophobic and racist remarks.
Perhaps equally sad was that several transgender activists reported the page to Facebook, but the social media site initially refused to take the page down, telling the angry activists that “they had reviewed the page you reported for containing hate speech or symbols and found it doesn’t violate our ‘Community Standards.’ ”
After finding out that Facebook wasn’t taking down the page, the page’s owner posted an inflammatory message to all of the critics.
“Man … All that reporting and you still can’t take me down? You degenerates are pathetic. You’re all a bunch of pu—ies,’” wrote the owner.
However, just after Gay Star News posted the article and began questioning Facebook senior managers about why they were still hosting the page, Facebook finally decided to take the page down, despite claiming that the page was acceptable under their community standards.
Well, it’s a good win for the trans community and the memory of Alcorn, but unfortunately, the hate doesn’t end there. Find out why Alcorn is still under attack from despicable online groups.
