With the live action fantasy offering of Cinderella almost taking in more than last week’s top 10 movies combined, it’s safe to say that this weekend’s box-office draw was much stronger than the previous week’s abysmal showing.
The Cate Blanchett-led update of the classic tale dominated in its opening week to the tune of $70 million, far surpassing the disappointing showing for the Liam Neeson action film, Run All Night, which also features Oscar- and Grammy-winning rapper, Common, but was only able to take in $11 million. Kingsman: The Secret Service was able to climb back to the No. 3 position with $6.2 million. Will Smith’s Focus brought in an additional $5.8 million to continue its slow crawl toward breaking even with $50 million budgeted to make the film. And rounding out the top five is last week’s No. 1 film, Chappie, which earned another $5.8 million.
