Usually when we see D.L. Hughley on-screen, he’s making us laugh with his hilarious comedy. But recently the veteran comedian pulled at our heart strings instead when he appeared on OWN’s “Where Are They Now” and broke down while discussing his son’s medical condition.
In the video clip, Hughley talked about his 26-year-old son, Kyle, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.
Hughley explained that, like many people with Asperger’s, his son stuck to a rigid daily routine due to his disorder. But when Hughley was in need of gas for his car one day, his son shocked him by offering to break his routine to get the gas for him.
“He said, ‘Daddy, I’ll do it.’ I’m a nervous wreck. So, he comes back in, and he gives me the receipt and the keys …,” said Hughley as his voice trailed off and he broke down in tears.
“And I could not stop crying, because he did something he was afraid to do. I just didn’t believe he could do it. He did it. I held him, and I said, ‘You’re gonna be all right,’ And I think sometimes I don’t know for sure. But he’s gonna be fine,” Hughley said.
It’s definitely touching to see Hughley share such a powerful moment in his life, as well as his ever-growing love and pride for his son.
