Though it was a close call, Straight Outta Compton managed to prevail over the surprise sleeper hit War Room to remain atop the weekend box office for a third consecutive week.
With over $134 million earned at the domestic box office, Compton has officially netted a profit of over $100 million as the film’s budget was only $28 million. With numbers like that, you can rest assured Hollywood will be looking to bank on the profitability of the film via sequels, spin-offs, or other hip-hop themed productions sooner than you think.
In somewhat of a slow week at the box office, Compton managed to maintain the number one position with an additional $13.2 million collected. Despite early projections calling it the winner, family marriage drama War Room came in at number two with an even $11 million. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation fell to number three this week drawing in $8.2 million. Owen Wilson’s action flick No Escape bowed at the number four spot with a modest $8.2 million. And rounding out the top five is the horror film Sinister 2, which brought in an estimated $4.6 million.
Also of note this week, making a surprise re-entry into the week’s top ten is Jurassic World, whose $3.12 million was good enough to land it at number nine. And much to the surprise of industry experts, Zac Efron’s We Are Your Friends opened to a dismal $1.8 million.
