New Jersey-born songbird Miesa has been generating a ton of buzz with her latest single “Blame My Ex,” and the singer spoke to rolling out about the track. She revealed that the tune almost landed at the feet of another famous R&B star, and she also shared just how much the song reflected what was happening in her own life.

“It was a record I was supposed to be doing for Kelly Rowland,” Miesa shares. “I was in a band and I was going different places trying to find myself. I was fresh out of a relationship and when I was singing the song I felt like ‘this is my life.’ And I wanted the song for myself! This was me, this was my story and I wanted to sing it to the audience and convey what the message was saying. It was the truth. It was real.

“When I was singing it, I was so attached to the song, like ‘Please don’t give it to Kelly Rowland! Let me have this one!” she says with a laugh.

Miesa admits that there are times when she does have a song that she wants to hold onto, even if it has been earmarked for placement on another artists’ project.

“That happens a lot, but you trust the people that you’re working with,” she says. “You know that there will be another song and whatever they need to do with a song is fine. I know something better will come along and if it happens, it just wasn’t meant to be. But that does happen!”

Her love of music has kept her from being closed-minded about her art in a myriad of ways; she’s comfortable with a variety of genres and styles and wants to be fearless in her approach while making sure everything she does is decidedly Miesa.

“I think I’m inspired by so much. Growing up in a musical household, I was influenced by so many artists,” she explains. “My sound is like a mix between R&B and pop. I don’t want to put myself in a box. I don’t want to just be categorized as an R&B artist or a pop artist. I don’t’ want to feel like I can’t go into a lane like that’s not me. And at the end of the day, I want to enjoy my music and I love my music.”

Her Filipino-Haitian heritage and her parents musical inclinations inspired her at an early age to pursue singing. She joined a band at her church to bond with her Haitian mom and she revealed how much her upbringing factors into her approach to music. As it pertains to the more romantic side of her love life, Miesa says that it’s a lot harder to get love and music on the same page.

“In the past, it has been hard,” she shares. “Because some people just don’t understand. They have this vision of who they want you to be. And with music it’s a process. They have to be understanding. But sometimes they think the worst. You’re in the studio all day and sometimes all night or you may have to take pics with a celebrity. And some people may not understand. It’s the business, it’s how it is. If you have that understanding, it’s fine. But that’s just the way that it is.”
