Kelis has been a busy woman this past year with the release of her fifth album, Food, a new line of cooking sauces, and the recent release of her first cookbook, My Life on a Plate. And now things are about to get even more busy in Kelis’ life because she’s pregnant with her second child. Ever since revealing the pregnancy during a concert this past summer, Kelis has been mum on her baby, but now she’s finally opening up about having another child.
In an interview with People, Kelis revealed that she’s nearly eight months pregnant and that she’s expecting to give birth in November. She also explained that her first son, 6-year-old Knight, who she shares with ex-husband Nas, is excited about having a younger sibling.
“[Knight’s] really excited — like over the moon,” she says. “He’s so excited, which is actually really cute.”
Kelis says she “waited to start showing” before telling Knight the news “just so that he could actually understand.”
However, she says Knight has been very understanding and open about the pregnancy.
“[He’s] really funny,” Kelis said. “He’s very grown up about everything. He was like, ‘Congratulations, Mama,’ like a friend [and] patted me on the back.”
And Kelis says Knight already plans to take his younger sibling under his wing: “I was like, ‘We’re going to have another baby in the family,’ so now he’s like, ‘I can’t wait. I’m going to teach the baby everything’ He’s all about it. He talks to my stomach all day long.”
Although Kelis hasn’t revealed the sex of her new baby yet, she explained that Knight is hoping for a little brother.
“I think it’s because he thinks they come out ready to play,” Kelis said. “In his mind, that would be better for him because they could play right away. He doesn’t understand that it’s going to take a while.”
As for Kelis, although life with one child is already a handful at times, she says she’s more than prepared for child number two.
“I figured once you’ve got one, your life is already so shifted … I’m assuming that you just pick up right there,” said Kelis.
