As “For Better or Worse” prepares to wrap its seventh season, actor Brad James credits Tyler Perry with the show’s success along with the success of many of the other shows on the OWN network.

“Tyler is able to tell multiple storylines at the same time and that’s what makes shows like this work,” James says.

“For Better or Worse” had the jump on several other shows because of the audience’s familiarity with the Angela and Marcus characters based on his original movie Why Did I Get Married, starring Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White.

Still, James insists it’s Tyler’s genius that manages to bring a fresh perspective to an age old conversation on relationships. “If we continued with that same storyline it would’ve gotten old by now and we’re going into its seventh season,” James explains.

“For Better or Worse” focuses on three couple at various stages in their relationships. As with most groups of friends, there are highs and lows in the friendships and a few opportunities for relationships or indiscretions to overlap.

“Another thing I think that has worked for us is having the flexibility to air two shows every Friday, back to back,” James says. “The audience gets the chance to see two full episodes and I believe that does a lot in keeping them connected.”

The season finale of “For Better or Worse” airs Friday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. EST/ 8 CST.
