When you get an invite to celebrate the birthday of the former MTV VJ Ed Lover, the first thoughts that go through your head after “of course I’m going” is “who’s gonna be there?” In the back of your head you’re hoping to see all the hip-hop heads he was in part responsible for “expanding their brand” (in today’s terms); but back in the day it was simply called “putting them on.”

Then you remember you are in the ATL, not Harlem, so you are thinking the guest list may be pretty limited. However, the moment you see Monie Love’s name, you know that everything is going to be all right, especially when DJ Nabs is also the DJ in charge of the turntables. What brings Harlem native Ed Lover to the dirty South? A new radio gig and the fresh country air? In January Ed Lover moved to Atlanta to join a new syndicated radio show on Boom 102.9 a classic hop-hop station he will host with Monie Love (who will remain in Philadelphia).

Nabs has been doing the show from Radio One headquarters in downtown Atlanta, where fellow syndicated host Rickey Smiley also works. Radio One is giving its classic hip- hop Boom station an upgrade to 97.5 while keeping its original 102.9 signal as well. The additional signal was added to enable Boom to better compete with OG 97.9, a rival hip-hop station where DJ Nabs has been the host for almost one year. Also, congrats to Bone Crusher, who landed a part-time gig at the station as well.

There was also a joint party going on as Kore Stacks celebrated the release of his new album with friends and paparazzi. Stacks will appear on the upcoming season of “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” as Kaleena’s protegé. We will get a chance to see him shadow her as a new artist and guide him through the steps of how to make it as an artist in these ATL streets. Stacks has already scored a collaboration single with R&B crooner Q Parker, formerly of 112. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out on VH1.
