Comedian Gary Owen has been working steadily in Hollywood for years, selling out stand-up comedy performances and landing roles in films like Ride Along, the Think Like a Man and “Real Husbands of Hollywood” while amassing a large Black audience with his brand of comedy. However, despite being a staple in the current landscape of comedy, Owen has still been floating under the radar of superstar status like fellow comedians Mike Epps and Kevin Hart. But Owen might just be inching his way toward that next level of fame thanks to news that he’s landed a new reality TV show.
Yesterday, Owen shared on his Instagram page the news that BET decided to pickup a new reality TV series that will focus on Owen’s life beyond the stage, including his 13-year marriage to his wife, Kendra Duke, and their three children.
“BET has picked up my show. I’m excited to share my life off the stage with you guys. This won’t be ratchet lol. Shout out to @troubleman31 & @stellabulochnikov for believing in me & this show from the beginning,” Owen captioned the photo, revealing that T.I., who has his own VH1 reality show, will be one of the producers alongside Owen..
BET also released a statement about the reality show, explaining Owen’s journey from being the first white host of “Comic View” to landing his own reality show on the network.
“Gary Owen is arguably Black America’s most beloved non-Black comic. He became part of the family as the first Caucasian man to host BET’s ComicView, and confirmed he was here to stay with his star turns in the Think Like A Man films, Ride Along and Meet The Blacks. He also starred in his own hit stand-up comedy specials including ‘I Agree With Myself,’ ‘True Story’ and the upcoming ‘I Got My Associates.’ Now, he brings his own interracial and blended family to BET in a 30-minute unscripted series that is colorful, truthful and hysterical. Gary Owen loves his wife so much, he wants to marry her again — and the path down the aisle is paved with non-stop laughter as he balances planning a wedding with raising his three rambunctious children and growing his white-hot career. ‘GARY OWEN FAMILY’ is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions. Bunim/Murray’s Gil Goldschein and Jeff Jenkins serve as executive producers along with Gary Owen, Stella Bulochnikov, Brian Sher and TIP ‘T.I.’ Harris,” the statement read.
There’s no word yet on when the series will premiere, but we’re sure that it’s going to be a hit with BET viewers.
