“Detroit music is alive and well!” says Dean Beanz, founder of Bling UniverCity, a multifaceted media company launched in 2008. Proving his statement, Beanz along with clothing store, Thrift on the Ave, put on the Dope Lil Corner’s All Acoustic Showcase. Featuring some of Detroit’s best underrated artists, the event was held in a dope lil’ corner above Bamboo Detroit shared work space.
Headlined and hosted by vocalist-songwriter Ideeyah, who is part of the dynamic group, Collective Peace, the show featured performances by Beanz, Cye Pie, Pierre Anthony and Steffanie Christi’an. DJ Equad complemented the chill vibe, rocking the crowd with old and new school joints.
Dean, who also likes to be called Cool Beanz, opened the show with songs from his upcoming album, Gogh, “Gogh” and “1Up.” The conscious lyricist spoke about keeping your dreams alive through your artistry and leaving a lasting legacy. Dean rebukes the notion that he’s too old to do his thing. He knows that independent artists can be lucrative without conforming to the mainstream. Beanz flexed his musical prowess by accompanying a few of the artists during their performances.
Singer-musician Cye Pie had the audience swaying and participating as she performed her set. This talented siren exuded an air of enchantment. To call Pierre Anthony a “rapper” is insufficient. The D-boy ripped a melodic mixture of ripe metaphors with undeniable swag. Slaying the stage per usual, rock goddess Steffanie Christi’an put the audience under her spell, giving passionate energy without apology.
Petite powerhouse Ideeyeah closed the show with tracks from her upcoming album, Brave, mesmerizing the crowd with her sultry vocals.
Created as an alternative to mainstream media outlets, “Dope Lil Corner” is a web series that spotlights local artists with unique talent. The shows are filmed at a secret location in Detroit. “Dope Lil Corner” highlights raw, unfiltered talent. Be on the look out for more from Beanz and his Bling UniverCity alumni.
