Iggy Azalea’s life went from the highest of heights in 2015 to taking an extremely public and painful nosedive in 2015 thanks to her high-profile breakup from her fiancé, Nick Young. But now that the dust has settled on the bitter split, Azalea is opening up about life post-Young and is explaining how her heartbreak completely derailed her career.

As previously reported, Azalea and Young started off the year on a bad note with the revelation that Young had cheated on her with other women. Despite the infidelity, Azalea tried to stick by Young’s side, but in June she decided to leave Young for good after she discovered that Young had impregnated his ex-girlfriend, Keonna Green, with their second child.

Despite the breakup, many fans were still wondering if Azalea would release new music, but with each passing month without a new album, many were beginning to speculate that Azalea’s career was over and that her time in the spotlight had passed. However, Azalea recently spoke about her career in a new interview and explained that she just needed time to lick her wounds.

“I needed a lot of time,” Azalea said. “I mean, you wake up one morning and your fiancé is having a baby with someone else, you’re going to need some time, right?”

Azalea went on to explain that her breakup even affected her music and the direction she wanted to go with her new album, Digital Distortion.

“I just kind of felt like, on top of me needing the personal time, then feeling, ‘OK, I’m single now. I want to have sexy songs. I want to say stuff about being single,’ ” Azalea said. “I obviously didn’t write that on my [original] album because when I wrote it I was about to get married … I don’t want to go and promote my album and get asked about my relationship that has just crumbled.”

Azalea says she wanted to release the new album back in July, but “it’s no secret, I kind of had my personal life fall apart.”

Despite the setbacks, Azalea says fans can expect her album to finally drop in January and it seems like she’s on the mend now that she has been spending a lot of her free time with fellow rapper French Montana.
