Massachusetts school librarian Liz Phipps Soeiro refused a gift of Dr. Seuss books from first lady Melania Trump because they’re “steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes.”
TrumpTwitter, a nemesis to BlackTwitter, saw this as an opportunity to drag former first lady Michelle Obama into the conversation. They dug up photos of her reading Dr. Seuss books to kids.
The White House announced one school in each state would receive a selection of Seuss’ books chosen by FLOTUS, including Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat.
Soeiro turned down the books and wrote in an open letter, “You may not be aware of this, but Dr Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature.
“Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes.
“Open one of his books (If I Ran a Zoo or And to Think That I Saw it On Mulberry Street, for example), and you’ll see the racist mockery in his art.”
