Debbie Allen
Howard University played a pivotal role in the life of the multi-talented Debbie Allen. After being immersed in the art of dance for a decade of her life, Allen was rejected by the North Carolina School of the Arts. She decided to throw in the towel, and attend Howard University, where she was reintroduced to her love for dance. Allen was a part of Howard’s class of 1971, but later received her honorary doctorate of humane letters. She also directed the sitcom “A Different World,” where she used her experiences at the university to make the show a more realistic depiction of a Black college campus.
La La Anthony
La La Anthony attended HU. Anthony told Howard Newsroom that the university played a “significant part” in who she is, from childhood to adulthood. The author and producer says she continues to carry all of her Howard lessons and experiences.
